SHANGHAI MASAI by Shinjuku Zulu

SONG STORY:

I lived in Tokyo for about 5 years and traveled extensively throughout Asia. One of my favourite things was to pick up cassettes or CDs (bootlegs) and hearing the local live folk or traditional music, including songs used in religious form. In larger cities (Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc) you would of course also hear major contemporary artists, and at that time the new music that was sampling or referencing “global music”. So the mash up of cultures, and the futurism of Tokyo mixed with the ancient temples (in Nepal, etc.) eventually led to the song Shanghai Masai (itself a bit of a play on the band name Shinjuku Zulu.) The song is a celebratory mashup of rap, beats, chants, and hybrid phrases re: global culture…

The song appears on the albums “Various Chimeras” as well as the compilation “Boomhitech Alittlebitwreck”.

LYRICS:

Wo ho, wo ho, wo howa howa ho
