DA RIDDIM GRIFFIN by Shinjuku Zulu
Japanese cheerleaders vs. German cabaret vs. squaredancing vs. electro vs. rock. It’s meta music — collage songs and chimerical sounds — the splicing together of a multitude of emotions, eras, information, cultures, languages, even architectural spaces (different reverbs)... all made cohesive by the rhythm.
And dumb lyrics.
Da Riddim Griffin is one of the rare (only?) intentionally humorous SZ/KIA songs. It’s a nod to the movie Cabaret, and a wink to Malcolm McLaren. But also it celebrates cheerleading, non-linear time, square dancing and other dance movements over the decades (watch some Lindy Hop videos). The song references my time spent in Japan, and for some reason this track is super popular in Brazil.
