Turbine Descending A Staircase

Turbine Descending A Staircase

Decided to do a radical freestanding remix of the sculpture Acceleration Still. Completely spontaneous, no pre-planning and/or fabricating of interior armature, similar to how I approach my outdoor works (ya work with what ya got.) All part of my recombinant painting, sculpture, installation series, where the work is remixable, intermixable, and infinitely unfinished. The original A/S painting (original flat arrangement of the sculpture, and which will never be seen) is 27 x 16', 300 aluminum panels. This iteration actually references the interior content, which is a butterfly wing composed...

Remixing, sampling, scratching, looping paintings & sculptures

(Scroll down for many images of remixed, intermixed, disrupted and distributed paintings & sculptures, incl. some text on the origin and ideas-behind, including reviews. Also see Statement) GLOBE & MAIL K.I.A.’s latest work, Acceleration/Still is a giant, wasp’s-nest-shaped painting/sculpture combo that references butterfly wings, fuselages and airplane blueprints, via over 300 painted panels. As the weeks progress, the object will grow, change shape and re-combine  TORONTO STAR Remix Music, Why Not Art?  K.I.A. is about art-making, music-making and idea-spinning,...

Metacollage

Metacollage

My very early works were collage, which, after an epiphany sitting in the maelstrom of people and noise in front of Shinjuku station, went linear. (Narrow strips of images stacked and interleaved). It was a way to compress a lot of information into a small space, to add rhythm -- or rather a rhyme scheme (ABABCC, with A being one image, B being another, etc.)   It also allowed glitching of a singular image; shifting a single line left or right, or flipping one line upside down, disrupted the image enough to make any analog construction methods (xacto knife, ruler; later, rows and columns...

<3 >|< RX

"<3 >|< RX", oilstick on aluminum, 24 " x 36" x 6", 2012. Upsetting the sets...a 2D Venn diagram on 50 panels, hung 3D; iphoto'd at owner's. The idea of this commissioned piece was to show how complex our relationships and interwoven our personalities become with another over time -- starting out as something as simple as the intersection point of two circles (the initial flat image,) but evolving into something infinitely and intimately enmeshed (the three-dimensional intermixed arrangement of that initial flat image.) (See also in this 2D/3D/4D series: Accelration / Still ...

My Anjat Anjan

“My Anjat Anjan” by K.I.A., 2010, 60” x 40”. C-Print on metallic photopaper, backmounted on aluminum, facemounted on clear acrylic. 1/5. A jet engine blueprint referencing Palenque. Part of a series exploring ancient/traditional art forms paired with current technology; and broadly, the transtemporal nature of the soul... See also: injunjetenjun kabukijetenjin (Turboaragato)

injunjetenjun

“injunjetenjun” by K.I.A. 2009, 60” x 40”, C-print on metallic photo paper. This series evolved while researching the “Acceleration / Still...” sculpture. Looking over hundreds of aviation blueprints and schematics, I kept seeing tribal masks. (And feel it was a glimpse of a metempsychosis -- the experience of my own past, or perhaps even future, lives.) Once again, my multi-temporal/cross-cultural/machine v. handmade themes arise... So this piece is described as a jet engine totem pole, or a Haida space shuttle. It is a blueprint of a jet engine, done in the manner of west-coast...

For the Record

For the Record

For the record (pun intended), below is a re-re-post of earlier musings -- not theory, but experiential -- from daze of yore. Pre-web ideas behind the remix/sample/collage/recombiant art. (Later posted on my first clunky website, mid 1990's):   "I paint information. This is 'stored' within a unifying shape--for example, mathematical equations contained inside the form of an African shield." K.I.A is very interested in having the viewer participate in his work--to not only think about the particular placement of words or pictorial elements and how they relate to the overall...
