CRISPR SCULPTR

This work consists of large paintings distributed (into a sculpture (that is a recombinant installation (that is a function))). Stage one (all the images below) is done; later stages are to be created in site-specific locations nationally and globally over the next few years, the work accreting to an enormous size... VORTEX 35' dia. Its multivalent presentation modes [SEE IMAGES BELOW] enables it to explore many ideas. The sculpture is a mutable metaphor,  a hackable technology, a language or a system or an open function for divining insight. Abstract ideas experienced concretely...

The idea of this commissioned piece was to show how complex our relationships and interwoven our personalities become with another over time -- starting out as something as simple as the intersection point of two circles (the initial flat image,) but evolving into something infinitely and intimately enmeshed (the three-dimensional intermixed arrangement of that initial flat image.) A 2D-3D-4D Painting>Sculpture>Installation  A two-dimensional painting, hung three-dimensionally, to be reconfigured over time. The initial image is a lepidoptera wing containing a collage of hundreds of aircraft blueprints. The initial sculptural configuration is a form suggestive of a cocoon, an airplane cockpit, an aircraft engine. For the Record

For the Record

For the record (pun intended), below is a re-re-post of earlier musings -- not theory, but experiential -- from daze of yore. Pre-web ideas behind the remix/sample/collage/recombiant art. (Later posted on my first clunky website, mid 1990's):   "I paint information. This is 'stored' within a unifying shape--for example, mathematical equations contained inside the form of an African shield." K.I.A is very interested in having the viewer participate in his work--to not only think about the particular placement of words or pictorial elements and how they relate to the overall...
