Word Works

Word Works

Word works, inspired by a dream where it was raining words, and as each word fell on your body, you felt it. The storm started out as a poem, then became a novel, then a library of books, a hurricane of stories and words. These are the first in this series. Each is seen as a page in a book, (smaller in size 9 x 12"), and will be numbered as such, ultimately to be exhibited in a linear sequence. The words are meant to be ineffable, speaking in tongues, language of the angels, whispers, on the edge of meaning. (other inspirations: Voynich manuscript. Cocteau Twins and Sigur Ros lyrics. The coding...

Collage

For the record, a survey of my early collages, and their evolution till today. The paper ones were made and exhibited in Tokyo, LA, Toronto. The series (style) began in 1987. The concept came fully-formed in a daydream while sitting at Shinjuku station: slice images to strip them to their core information, and then interleave the images to compress them into dense meanings. It also enabled works using disparate material and juxtapostions of ideas to visually cohere. I have always described these as having a visual rhyme scheme, A/B/A/B/C/C.   Poetry, music, and DNA. Most carefully composed,...

Art Troll and geoDNA

Art troll?  Here's how I ended up working (lurking), in inclement weather, under a low bridge... with a racoon. Some of my current explorations involve creating visual DNA en plein air at disparate locations  (ultimately to be done coast to coast to coast across Canada, then other countries) and combining them together. Hundreds of paintings will initially be made, and then destroyed, as they are sliced up into pictorial genes which will  be CRISPR'd together into  single complex artworks, paintings made of paintings. The final pieces will be a hybrid of painting, collage and sculpture....

Just had a two hour studio visit with a curator from the AGO,  linking the work from the early linear A/B/A/B/ collages done in Tokyo through the remxible installations and sculpture work to the digital ice graffiti, laser palimpsest and outdoor ephemeral art, to the latest genetically modified object explorations...

Turbine Descending A Staircase

Decided to do a radical freestanding remix of the sculpture Acceleration Still. Completely spontaneous, no pre-planning and/or fabricating of interior armature, similar to how I approach my outdoor works (ya work with what ya got.) All part of my recombinant painting, sculpture, installation series, where the work is remixable, intermixable, and infinitely unfinished. The original A/S painting (original flat arrangement of the sculpture, and which will never be seen) is 27 x 16', 300 aluminum panels. This iteration actually references the interior content, which is a butterfly wing composed...
