((0)), for Fun(d): Upstepped & Intermixed

Image: “((0))”, size variable, but here 60” x 70”, acrylic on aluminum A tectonic / bar graph rearrangement of the painting (((0))), spliced with a couple white sections from a second painting. The original version of this work was chosen for the lobby of a hedge fund, but I suggested a rising arrangement, with a dynamic upwards movement of four segments. Shift, fluidity and transformation are constant themes in my work. This piece changes physically and perceptually: the iridescent paint light-shifts as you move (the banding appears); the silver gaps pop with the light; the various...

Palimpsest Wrestling, Gryphon Riffing

My static paintings have become intermixable like my recombinant panel works. ‘floSteppa’, the above piece, is a combination of 4 separate painting explorations: the top acrylic layer is from the shift/drift/glitch series; the 2nd layer is from the wrapped works; beneath that, from the reflective silver series (Ex.); and the bottom layer, from the minimalistic linear paintings. All four series evolved completely separately over time. As I began to write this I thought of ‘floSteppa’ as a palimpsest (a manuscript that’s been scraped and overwritten many times to save parchment;...

Ash & Ice, Sun & Snow, Wind & Wood, Fail & Fun

Successing the fail. The idea was to glitch some lace, use it as a stencil, with fireplace ash as spray paint, and white snow on the lake as the canvas. I limited my tools: sifter, fabric, bag of ash, a cardboard box. (Later allowed some broken branches into the mix). The cardboard was to add some linear elements and rectilinear knockouts -- my only condition was that it sorta had to have a digital look to it. Doing art outside solidly puts you back in your skin, and  attunes you to nature: you feel the wind (for the direction of the falling ash), observe incoming clouds (for how they’ll...
