mmm skyscraper i love you

"mmm skyscraper i love you" - A spliced skyscraper, a volumetric painting. A three-dimensional version of the genetically modified paintings: visual genes recombined. Transient or fixed arrangements (as column, as barrier, as nodes, as radius on wall, and so on.) This version 3', wood and acrylic. Developing versions in painted steel. Snow Collage IV – Ash, Snow, Bulrush, Wind

Composed from ash and wind on snow (a charcoalotype?), an ephemeral outdoor installation, an annual tradition. This one is about 15' diameter. (Previous ones, 30', here, and here, and some snow graffiti here.) 8 hours + to make; 8 minutes to disappear (it rained shortly after completion). Gone like the year. Indoor version in the works:  ash or graphite on sand, larger in scale and longer lived. (Prints available).         Other works in this series: And earlier:

distributed sculpture, decentralized installation

The decentralized sculpture / distributed painting idea extended outdoors; hi concept - lo materials, geotagged  by site-specific materials. Many discrete units -- ideally to be thousands -- comprising a larger volumetric painting (sculpture).  Below to be scaled up x 100. Monolith, column, detritus, array, line... developing. Various iterations below, some digital rendering of larger scale versions, then below that some images of CRISPR SCULPTR, a larger distributed sculpture, both real world and mocked up versions.   CRISPR SCULPTR a recombinant...

Artitechture

This work is a 12' high ephemeral architectonic palimpsest, a crystalline tornado poem, an optically shifting spaceship skyscraper, a bas-relief diagonal tower of babel. Future iterations will be even bigger -- 30' high or long (on the ground), painting as monumental architecture. (And art as physical & mental challenge -- ephemeral does not equal effortless.  Art as intense sport, as Sisyphean marathon.) As it is done directly on the wall, it can only be experienced in one location. And as all walls eventually come down, it's lo-fi high beauty that can only be experienced for a moment...

What An Artist Does

IMAGE: recombinant sculpture; resequenced paintings; palimpsest series, and brand new series UPDATE:  I spent 70hrs/week for 6 weeks at an art residency, a CRISPR SCULPTR, this painting-as-sculpture-as-installation-as-function ... artwork as endurance sport, as improvisational music, as gene-edited... here's some images of the recombinant work: See here for many other  Projects Every so often someone asks me "What do you do everyday?". I'm surprised at people's surprise at how much there is to do as an artist -- I suppose the romantic idea of just making stuff whenever 'inspired'...
