International Art Residency

  • August 6, 2017

I'm doing an artist residency at the Banff Centre fall 2017. (Artists, curators, critics, writers etc. from all around the world attend the Center to develop their work). I'm going to be doing the first stage of an infinite sculpture that is also a painting. That is also an installation. That is also an organism, a time crystal, a node, a mob, music, and a virus. A sculpture that is a function. This first stage will be ambitiously big, but it will grow even larger in scale as subsequent parts are made over time in other international settings or residencies. It will also morph in shape, and accrete...

What An Artist Does

What An Artist Does

(Image: recombinant sculpture; resequenced paintings; palimpsest series, and brand new series contact for details) (See here for many  Projects) Every so often someone asks me "What do you do everyday?". I'm surprised at people's surprise at how much there is to do as an artist -- I suppose the romantic idea of just making stuff whenever 'inspired' is a myth that still persists. So I decided to document my daily art tasks. Below are just a couple weeks out of the last month or so.  I've left out all domestic and/or 'real life' stuff. I was going to excise some of the more specific...

((0)), for Fun(d): Upstepped & Intermixed

Image: “((0))”, size variable, but here 60” x 70”, acrylic on aluminum A tectonic / bar graph rearrangement of the painting (((0))), spliced with a couple white sections from a second painting. The original version of this work was chosen for the lobby of a hedge fund, but I suggested a rising arrangement, with a dynamic upwards movement of four segments. Shift, fluidity and transformation are constant themes in my work. This piece changes physically and perceptually: the iridescent paint light-shifts as you move (the banding appears); the silver gaps pop with the light; the various...
